How to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier with Korean Skincare
Stinging, redness and sudden sensitivity usually mean a compromised barrier. Here is the Korean reset routine.
Your skin barrier is the outer layer that keeps water in and irritants out. Over-exfoliating, strong actives, harsh cleansers, sunburn and dry AC air can all weaken it. The fix is not more products, it is fewer, gentler ones.
Signs your barrier is damaged
- Products that never stung before now sting.
- Redness, tightness or flaky patches.
- Sudden breakouts or rough texture.
- Skin that feels dry however much moisturiser you use.
The barrier reset routine (2 to 4 weeks)
1. Pause actives
Stop retinoids, acids, strong vitamin C and exfoliating pads until skin feels normal.
2. Gentle cleanse
Use a mild, low-pH cleanser once or twice a day: Celimax Dual Barrier Mild Gel Cleanser 200 ml or Dr. Althea Amino Acid Gentle Bubble Cleanser 140 ml.
3. Soothe
Centella, panthenol and heartleaf calm irritation: Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Toner Unscented 200 ml, Numbuzin No.1 Pantothenic B5 Active Soothing Serum 50 ml or Anua HeartLeaf 80% Soothing Ampoule 30 ml.
4. Rebuild with ceramides
Dr. Althea 147 Barrier Cream 50 ml, Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream 50 ml, iUNIK Beta-Glucan 3X Barrier Cream 50 ml or Celimax Dual Barrier Skin Wearable Cream 50 ml.
5. Protect
Choose a gentle sunscreen such as Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Daily Sun Lotion (SPF50+ PA++++) 60 ml.
Reintroducing actives
Once skin has felt normal for a week or two, bring back one active at a time, a few nights a week, and keep your barrier cream in the routine.
